Oct 24, 2011 (newstodate): Russia is now in the final stages of commissioning the Gorno-Altaysk Airport, in the southern Caucasus region, after a comprehensive redevelopment.
The airport's 1,300m runway has been extended to 2,300m, equipped with new lighting and landing systems, MET services have been upgraded, radion and communications systems have been installed, and the airport will now be capable of handling mid-size commercial aircraft including Boeing 737 and Airbus A320.
Plans are to launch flights on a new route to Moscow before the end of this year, and other destinations on the wishing list include Krasnoyarsk, Tomsk, Omsk, Tyumen, St Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, and Nizhny Novgorod.
The owner of Gorno-Altaysk Airpors is the construction and infrastructure projects group, Sibmost.
