Oct 11, 2011 (newstodate): Lithuania's Palanga International Airport is encouraged by the decision by SAS to expand its traffic to and from Scandinavia.
-SAS is to launch new services between Palanga and Oslo from October 31, 2011, offering three weekly rotations using Boeing 737-600 aircraft, says Vaida Gendrolyte, Palanga Airport sales manager.
-This will bring in new traffic mainly in the business segment, but hopefully also in the form of new leisure traffic between Norway and Lithuania. Besides the traffic between Palanga and Norway, the new service will also open up for transfer to and from SAS' transatlantic flights between Oslo Gardermoen Airport and New York.
-The three new weekly Oslo flights by SAS will complement the two existing weekly rotations by Norwegian, but happily these flights are not on the same week-days so we hope they will all develop by the increased offering.
-All these flights are using rather large aircraft, so the entry by SAS on the Oslo-route will represent a major challenge for us all to fill the seats.
-SAS is also operating twice daily between Palanga and Copenhagen Airport, and on this route capacity will increase from CRJ200 to CRJ900 aircraft from the coming winter schedule.
-Palanga International Airport will officially open its new passenger terminal in November this year, but we have actually already been using the new facility in connection with the recent basketball events that generated much ad-hoc charter traffic
-Palanga International Airport handled a total of 102,510 passengers in 2010, and we expect this volumes to grow slightly in 2011, says Ms Gendrolyte.
