October 26, 2011 (newstodate): A new Icelandic carrier is under formation in the low-cost segment.
Behind the new project are former Iceland Express CEO Matthias Imsland and an investor, Skuli Mogensen who recently acquired the Icelandic MP Bank besides being former CEO and a major owner of the software company OZ and other industrial projects in Iceland and Canada.
Initial plans are to launch low-cost traffic between Iceland and Copenhagen, London and Berlin from spring 2012 with a Boeing 737-700 aircraft on a lease contract, according to industry sources.
The business model of the new carrier will be based on the experience from Iceland Express where Mr Imsland served as CEO from 2006 till September 2011 when he stepped down in disagreement with Palmi Haraldsson, who owns the Eignarhaldsfelagid Fengur hf, an Icelandic based travel group behind Iceland Express and the UK-based ACMI carrier Astraeus Airlines.
