Jan 12, 2011 (newstodate): Sweden's Malmo Airport is close to Scandinavia's largest airport, Copenhagen Airport - but sees potentials for a close fight for air cargo.
-As for passengers, Copenhagen Airport is definitely the dominating player in the region. But when it comes to airfreight we are much more like competitors on equal terms, says Peter Weinhandl, Malmo Airport manager.
-Air cargo is an important contributor to Malmo Airport's revenues and this secures high attention on the needs in this business segment. As one example, we are already now considering the viability of investing in a new cargo terminal to cater to the needs of existing and future airfreight customers.
-In 2010 we saw the introduction of freighter flights by the Russian company AirBridgeCargo, operating one, and sometimes two, weekly flights with Boeing 747-400F aircraft from Malmo Airport to Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow from April 2010, connecting to onward flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Seoul, and Tokyo.
-This was an immediate boost to our image, and proves that we have the capacity to handle large freighters, providing short lead-times and a high quality in handling to cargo customers, says Mr Weinhandl.
