Jan 18, 2011 (newstodate): There may be hopes and aspirations for Asian freighter traffic at several airports in the northernmost parts of Scandinavia - but viable options are few.
-Airports in Sweden like Hudiksvall, Sundsvall, or Evenness in Norway may have ambitions to attract shipments of Norwegian salmon for air carriage to destinations in Asia. But none of these airports can offer anything in the general cargo segment, and a sound mix of cargo loads is required to make ends meet, says Lars Karbin, Kallax Cargo managing director.
-The only airport in the northern region poised to serve both the Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish air cargo markets remains Luleaa Kallax Airport with the region's largest runway at 3,350m.
-Luleaa Kallax Airport is ideally positioned to handling of Norwegian seafood from the production sites in the northern part of the country that will gain in importance as sea water temperatures move production north, and the airport can also attract general cargo from industries in the northern parts of the three countries.
-Talks are currently being conducted with two or three airlines as well as with forwarders, and I am convinced that with Swedavia now at the helmet we will see freighter traffic building up, especially after the abolition of Russian over-flight charges after Russia's admission into the WTO expected by 3013. Luleaa Kallax Airport is destined to become the region's international freighter hub, says Mr Karbin.
