Jan 21, 2011 (newstodate): Latvia's privately-owned Tukums Airport is amidst a major project aiming at strengthening its role in the country's aviation infrastructure.
-We are currently building a new passenger terminal with the capacity of handling some 500 passengers per day, says Oksana Sergeja, Tukums Airport executive Director.
-The airport has one 2,500 m runway, and we have installed a new runway lighting system and ILS that are now both in the certification process to be completed by late spring 2011.
-Also in the pipeline is a new ATC facility, and while we are currently only open for visual flight operations, we will thus soon be able to expand our services to full instrumental flight operations.
-When all these conditions are met and the new terminal is commissioned, our hopes are to attract regular air traffic, including low-cost operators. Talks are being conducted and we expect new business opportunities to open up, says Ms Sergeja.
With a history as a Soviet air force base, Tukums Airport is only slightly more than one hour's drive from Riga, the country's capital, and is also connected to Riga by a train service.
