Jan 12, 2011 (newstodate): India's low-cost carrier IndiGo has started 2011 by announcing the aviation industry's largest aircraft order yet.
The carrier has signed a MoU with Airbus for delivery of no less than 180 Airbus A320 Family aircraft, signaling a deal worth about USD 15.6 billion.
The order will comprise delivery of 30 A320 and another 150 A320neo - the new cost-efficient version equipped with sharklets, and IndiGo has thus become the launch customer for this new upgraded Airbus A320 aircraft type.
Deliveries will start from 2015, when the carrier has completed deliveries of the 100 Airbus A320 aircraft ordered at the 2005 Paris Airshow.
IndiGo currently operates a fleet of 29 aircraft, and this will grow to 241 when all aircraft now ordered or comprised by the new MoU have been delivered.
