Jan 21, 2011 (newstodate): In contrast to its strategy for traffic to Scandinavia, Qatar Airways is taking a cautious approach to opening new flights between Doha and new destinations in the East and Central Europe.
Qatar Airways put Stockholm, Sweden, on its route map from November 27, 2007, followed by Copenhagen, Denmark, from March 30, 2010.
In both cases, the routes opened up with initially four weekly Airbus A319 rotations, soon increasing to daily Airbus A319 operations before going up to daily operations with Airbus A330-200 aircraft as was the case at Stockholm from the start of this winter's schedule, while the Airbus A300-200 aircraft will be introduced on the route to Copenhagen from the start of this summer's schedule after only one year of services, while frequency is also expected to go up to daily flights from winter 2011.
By contrast, Qatar Airways has just added new flights to Romania and Hungary in the form of a routing Doha-Bucharest-Budapest, operated four times weekly with an Airbus A320 aircraft.
With the first flight on January 17, 2011, Qatar Airways will obviously wait and see how the two new destinations perform before committing itself to serving the two markets with dedicated direct non-stop flights.
