Jan 20, 2011 (newstodate): Though not a large player in German airfreight, SAS Cargo still plays a significant role in the market.
Since June 2010, SAS Cargo sales in Germany has been entrusted to the cargo GSA company Aerotrans Luftfahrtagentur GmbH that started out in June 2009 as the carrier's GSA in South Germany.
-First of all, SAS Cargo is attractive in the German market due to its frequent services comprising some 50 weekly flights from several German destinations to points in Scandinavia, says Michael Jaensch, Aerotrans CEO.
-To this should be added flights by Spanair from Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg to destinations in Spain and Africa as well as Blue1 operating to Helsinki from Hamburg and Munich.
-The position of SAS Cargo in the German market splits into three geographical areas - North, Mid and South Germany.
-SAS Cargo is very strong in North Germany's Hamburg-area with fast trucking to Copenhagen Airport offering next-day connections to destinations on SAS' intercontinental route network, which is actually faster than, or as fast as connections with Lufthansa Cargo via Frankfurt, or KLM via Amsterdam. In Hamburg, SAS Cargo ranks among the top-3 air cargo companies.
-In the mid-German Frankfurt area, SAS Cargo provides both flown and trucked cargo services especially targeting Scandinavia and Finland, easily transited through Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo and providing access to destinations that are not otherwise easily reached.
-The position in the southern area including Munich is naturally weaker due to geography, but SAS Cargo is still of importance due to its excellent express services and the access via Copenhagen to markets like Greenland and the Faeroe Islands. These volumes may not be large, but can be of strategic importance in the case of spares and other time-sensitive shipments.
-Our customers in Germany are also impressed by the unique quality of SAS Cargo's trucking services in the US, even outside the company's own destinations. Coupled with full transparency in the form of efficient IT solutions and track-and-trace of shipments on the road, SAS Cargo holds a high reputation.
-So after all we see huge potentials from our cooperation with SAS Cargo, and while the Icelandic volcano ash took a heavy toll on the industry during our first year with SAS Cargo we are confident of growth and further business development, says Mr Jaensch.
