Jan 07, 2011 (newstodate): Despite Icelandic volcano ash clouds and labor unrest, Finnair Cargo still managed to close the books with a total of 123,154 tonnes of cargo transported in 2010.
This translated into a growth by 38 percent, y-o-y, in a market where cargo rates did recover after the disastrous 2009, not least on the Asian lanes where the company has its stronghold.
The volumes through the year were also boosted by the introduction since May 12, 2010, of own freighter services to Hong Kong and Seoul, and, from November 19, 2010, to New York.
Finnair Cargo also operates a weekly dedicated cargo flight with full belly capacity on an Airbus A340-300 from Helsinki to Frankfurt adding 55 tonnes of uplift.
Pure cargo flights, including the MD-11F and the A340-300 operations, thus aggregated a total of 17,180 tonnes in 2010.
During 2010, Asian traffic grew by 23 percent, y-o-y, to 72,911 tonnes, while the European sector came second with 23,429 tonnes, up 16.8 percent.
North Atlantic traffic grew by 23.5 percent, y-o-y, to 8,206 tonnes, not including the cargo already accounted for on the pure freighter side.
Domestic cargo played a dwindling rope with Finnair Cargo that saw volumes down 14.9 percent to 2,287 tonnes in 2010.
While the strike in December took a heavy toll on the airline's passenger traffic, cargo fared well as the company operated an emergency cargo-only flight schedule with Airbus A340 aircraft, while the MD-11F traffic was not obstructed by the labor union strike.
Thus Finnair Cargo still saw its cargo up by 33.3 percent, y-o-y, in December 2010, to 9,500 tonnes, including 2,819 tonnes on the all-cargo flights.
