Jan 28, 2011 (newstodate): Once again, Nagorno-Karabagh's Stepanakert Airport claims to be opening soon for commercial traffic.
Stepanakert Airport, in the disputed Nagorno-Karabagh region under de-facto Armenian control since the war with Azerbaijan in the 90ies, has been inoperative since 2991, but the latest plan is to reopen it in May 2011 with flights from Yerevan, Armenia.
The airport was last to open from October 2010 already, but delays in the completion of the passenger terminal reportedly caused plans to be kept on hold.
Used equipment from the Armenian airports of Stepanavan and Gyumri has been installed at Stepanakert Airport, and an airline has been set up in Nagorno-Karabagh to provide flights to Yerevan.
Azerbaijan remains strongly opposed to the launch of flights.
