Sep 27, 2010 (newstodate): Like two other Latvian airports, Daugavpils Airport, 230 km from the country's capital, has also been cleared to apply for EU funding of plans for airport modernization.
But - in contrast to the airports of Venspils and Liepaja, the Daugavpils Airport authorities are still undecided about exactly what projects to put on the application.
-It will maybe be runway extension and infrastructure, but this is so complicated that we have not yet a full overview and a plan to be presented, says the secretary to the airport manager, Viktors Puzans.
Formerly a Soviet air force base, the airport has a 2,500m runway that will require upgrading, and earlier plans also included construction of a new passenger terminal as well as cargo facilities.
Last year the airport announced its decision to launch an international tender to attract investors to turn the airport into a new international airport that could serve also as an alternative to Riga International Airport that is currently supported by airports in Estonia or Lithuania as a back-up under adverse conditions.
The airport currently handles on general aviation and has no scheduled services.
