Sep 22, 2010 (newstodate): Estonia's Amari Air Base is currently amidst major reconstruction works, and while dedicated to military purposes it could play a future role in commercial aviation as well.
-The ministry of defense has not ruled out this possibility, but it would require special agreements with commercial operators as well as their investments in the infrastructure needed to provide passenger services, a terminal and allocation of a special area in the airport, says Peeter Kuimet, MoD Estonia Press Officer.
-The 3,000 m runway and the taxiway systems is capable of accepting all kind or aircraft, but we still need to implement modern NAVAIDS and other infrastructure to accept traffic on a 24-7 basis. In the meantime we operate only in daylight and good weather conditions.
-We expect the remaining infrastructure to be in place by 2012, and if commercial operators would be interested in operating at the base we have no objections, says Mr Kuimet.
The use of Amari Air Base would allow Estonia's Tallinn Airport to divert traffic to this airport rather than using Helsinki Vantaa Airport in Finland, as is currently the case under adverse weather conditions.
