Sep 15, 2010 (newstodate): SAS Cargo's handling arm, Spirit Air Cargo Handling has now taken over its new cargo terminal at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, but the launch of operations will be slightly delayed compared to earlier plans.
Instead of opening up from October 31, 2010, the new date will be postponed till the latter half of November 2010.
-We are currently installing offices and data systems as well as ULD handling equipment and this is a rather time-consuming process, says Bjorn Kardell, SAS Spirit Sweden managing director.
-Actually we are not purchasing much new tools and equipment in order to save costs and keep budgets. When we open, the start will be accepting export shipments at the new terminal while keeping imports running for another week at the old terminal that will then be shut down gradually, says Mr Kardell.
The new terminal covering 15,200 sq.m floor space is designed to match expected growth over the new 10-15 years.
The annual design handling capacity is about 200,000 tonnes of cargo, while the current annual volumes handled by SAS Cargo at Stockholm Arlanda Airport are around 100,000 tonnes.
