Sep 24, 2010 (newstodate): Lithuania's Kaunas Airport, formerly the country's largest cargo airport, is seeing volumes rising steeply again.
The latest news from the airport of the massive influx of ex-China exports to the Baltic, East and Central European markets is boding well for continued growth in volumes.
According to airport statistics, a total of 2,712 tonnes of cargo was handled in the first eight months of 2010, and the Lithuanian logistics company Hoptrans that is behind the new Shanghai-Kaunas operation accounts for 1,715 tonnes of this volume during the same period.
This indicates that some 1,000 tonnes of cargo has so far passed through Kaunas Airport generated by the airport's other cargo operators, TNT and UPS.
The new Hoptrans-driven volumes carried on Polet Airlines' IL-96-400T freighter once-weekly starting from September 21 this year will bring in a further 80 tonnes per flight, adding a further 1,000 tonnes to the airport's current volumes that may end up around 6,000 tonnes in 2010.
This is still some way to go up to the 10,000 tonnes per year that was earlier handled at Kaunas Airport when the ex-China transit cargo for Russia was handled here.
During the first eight months of 2010 Lithuania's capital airport at Vilnius handled a total of 3,314 tonnes of cargo, up 25 percent, y-o-y.
