Sep 22, 2010 (newstodate): The Lithuanian logistics company Hoptrans has opened a new venue for ex-China exports to customers in the Baltic, Central and Eastern European countries.
The company has set up a comprehensive logistics chain from Shanghai to destinations in the Baltic region, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Germany, comprising a weekly freighter flight from Shanghai to Kaunas Airport, in Lithuania, and own road feeder services from Kaunas to final points of destination with distribution within 24-48 hours.
-We have signed a contract with Polet Airlines for chartering of an IL-96-400T freighter offering 80 tonnes of capacity once weekly, and the first flight was operated yesterday, September 21, 2010, says Martynas Smitas, Hoptrans Logistic General Manager.
-The existing contract covers a weekly operation from now till Christmas, and we are already negotiating a similar agreement to cover the full year 2011. Details will probably be announced by November.
-We consider this a major event in Baltic aviation and air cargo business as this new route shifts the existing order of transit cargo transportation of the European map. However, we are of course not a competitor to Frankfurt or Amsterdam, rather a complement, says Mr Smitas.
Beside this new service, Hoptrans is already active at Kaunas Airport with a steady flow of ex-China exports destined for Russia and transited at the airport on road feeder services by Hoptrans.
In the first eight months of 2010, Hoptrans Logistic thus handled 1,715 tonnes of cargo at Kaunas Airport which was almost twice the full-year volume in 2009.
