Sep 20, 2010 (newstodate): Hopes are rising in Greenland for a resumption of air services to Canada.
Close cultural bonds connect the arctic people in the region, and Air Greenland planned to launch flights between Nuuk and Iqaluit, in north-easternmost Canada already from this summer.
Cost-cutting efforts, however, grounded the plans, but it is now expected that the new report to be delivered this autumn by Greenland's transport commission will revive the project for launch in 2012.
The route was earlier operated by East Air in cooperation with Air Greenland, later transferred to operate into Kangerlussuaq with larger aircraft, but eventually closed in 2001.
The runway at Greenland's Nuuk Airport is only 950 m long, allowing for traffic by only smaller regional turboprop aircraft and helicopters.
