Sep 08, 2010 (newstodate): While Fraport has unveiled plans for a massive expansion of cargo facilities at Frankfurt Airport's CargoCity South, Lufthansa Cargo - the airport's single largest cargo company - is still stuck on ground till a solution on freighter night flights is found.
Fraport will develop an additional 27 ha of airport area as part of an expansion project aiming to handle 3.2 million tonnes of airfreight by 2020.
On the other hand, Lufthansa Cargo is keeping its growth plans at the airport on hold.
-Germany is World Logistics Champion and has, with the airport of Frankfurt, all chances to remain in this leadership position. Also Lufthansa Cargo is convinced of the unique competitive position of Frankfurt, and wants to grow here, too, says Michael Gontgens, Lufthansa Cargo Head of PR & Internal Communications.
-However, investments in our infrastructure in the northern area of the airport cannot be decided upon yet. As a home carrier we rely heavily on a minimum number of night flight operations. Before the court decision it is simply not possible to decide on an investment of several hundred million euros, says Mr Gontgens.
The decision by the court in Leipzig on the night ban-issue is not expected before spring 2011.
