Sep 15, 2010 (newstodate): One of the participants in the drive for e-freight in Finland, DHL Global Forwarding is satisfied with the experience with paperless export shipments.
-All our shipments from Helsinki to Hong Kong by Finnair are traveling paperless, and the systems work 100 percent, says Jari Aaltonen, DHL Global Forwarding Finland.
-On the other hand, efforts to open the second e-freight lane from Helsinki to New York got stuck, so overall the process is rather slow-going.
-The precondition for implementation of e-freight is of course that systems are in place at both ends of the line, but even so differences between stations, airlines, agents and corporate cultures still bog down the pace.
-Also the e-freight works only with point-to-point shipments on a single airline. If more airlines are involved, paper documentation is still required. And even in the case of New York where e-freight is implemented, authorities will still require printed documents.
-Also on the Hong Kong lane, Finnair is not able to implement e-freight shipments into Helsinki. Probably the reason is that the carrier is represented in Hong Kong by a cargo GSA, and this complicates matters.
-But whenever e-freight is an option, it is certainly a success that saves resources and offers high-quality services, says Mr Aaltonen.
