Sep 10, 2010 (newstodate): Driven by strong month-by-month increases in cargo volumes through 2010, Finnair Cargo is now taking steps to optimize the utilization of its cargo terminal at Helsinki Vantaa Airport.
-So far into 2010, cargo volumes have indeed been very decent, but
for the time being we still will run the operation from our existing terminal, says Erkka Suvikumpu, Finnair Cargo VP marketing & business development.
-Having said that, we will, however, make quite a number of layout modifications to the existing terminal in order to handle the volumes
and serve our customers better. These modifications are planned to be completed by the end of this year.
-After that, the capacity of the current terminal is fully utilized and the next step would then be a decision to construct a new cargo terminal, says Mr Suvikumpu.
Effective from November 1, 2007, Finnair split the cargo terminal operation from Finnair Cargo by setting up a new fully-owned Finnair Group subsidiary, Finnair Cargo Terminal Operations Oy with some 300 employees.
This construction also formally prepared the road for a future partnership with other players, which could become an issue in relation to a decision to set up a new cargo terminal.
