Sep 23, 2010 (newstodate): Plans for turning Russia's Astrakhan Narimanovo Airport into a major air cargo hub are gaining momentum.
Astrakhan Airport and Azerbaijan Airlines have signed an agreement for joint investments of 200 mio Rubles in the project comprising design of a new aircargo terminal, freighter ramp facilities and extension of the runway from 2,500 to 3,200 m.
The business case of Astrakhan Narimanovo Airport builds on the growth in the regional oil search and production industries and the potentials in providing a hub for distribution in Russia and Kazkahstan of air cargo from Iran, China and South East Asia.
Azerbaijan Airlines is to assist the Russian airport in designing the new terminal, based on its experience from construction of a similar complex at Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport.
Astrakhan Narimanovo Airport is 51 percent owned by the Russian state, while Novaport holds 43 percent of the stake.
