Aug 04, 2010 (newstodate): Serbia's Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport is planning for a major modernization and expansion over the next 10 years.
A total of 118 mio euro will be invested in projects including the expansion of the existing airport passenger terminal as well as construction of a second runway and other facilities.
The aim is to expand the airport's capacity to handling of more than five million passenger per year.
Today, Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport has one 3,400m runway and has the capacity of handling about 2.5 mio passengers annually.
The projects now on the table will be financed by the Serb state in cooperation with the airport.
In 2009, the airport handled a total volumes of 8,129 tonnes of cargo, down 18 percent y-o-y, and 1,031 tonnes of mail, down three percent.
