Aug 27, 2010 (newstodate): As part of its on-going efforts to trim its aircraft fleet, SAS is to phase out its fleet of eight MD-90-30 aircraft.
The carrier has signed a leasing contract, arranged by SkyWorks Leasing, LLC, with an unnamed US carrier - probably Delta Air Lines - that will take in the aircraft during the period starting from Q3, 2010, till the end of Q2, 2011.
Earlier in 2010 the Scandinavian carrier sold 18 MD-80 aircraft to the US-based Allegiant Travel Company, parent company of the US carrier Allegiant Air that earlier also acquired 13 similar aircraft from SAS.
All aircraft will undergo extensive maintenance checks prior to delivery to the Lessee.
After this latest transaction the SAS Group will be operating fewer than 20 MD-82 aircraft in a fleet that comprises a total of 239 aircraft, of which 145 aircraft are operated by SAS itself.
SAS has earlier announced plans renew its narrow-body fleet in 2015-2020.
