Aug 18, 2010 (newstodate): Many Russian airlines are in a financially unstable condition, which poses a threat to air safety.
A recent monitoring of Russia's commercial airlines, performed by the state agency Rosaviatsii, has shown that some 40 percent of all Russian carriers are financially unstable.
The country's five largest carriers, Aeroflot, Transaero, S7, UTAir and Ohrenburg Airlines, are all in fine shape, but of the carriers listed 6 to 17 according to passenger turnover, seven are at risk, financially.
The agency however refuses to name these seven carriers.
The monitoring has been instituted after the demise of the former attempt to merge Russian carriers into AIRUnion which disclosed the financial fragility of many Russian airlines.
