Aug 09, 2010 (newstodate): Despite the international freeze on the break-away province of Abkhazia, Russia still pledges its support to develop civil aviation ties.
Speaking to a group of Russian tourists in Batumi, Abkhazia, the Russian president has promised Russia's support to the continued development of Batumi Airport as well more flight connections between Abkhazia and Russian cities.
ICAO has however consistently ruled out its acceptance for commercial flights at Abkhazia's Sukhumi Airport, maintaining that the airspace of Georgia remains a unified entity and it is up to Georgia's civil aviation authorities to issue an application for allowing flights at the airport.
