Aug 09, 2010 (newstodate): Air cargo through Norway's Oslo Gardermoen Airport fell 9.2 percent, y-o-y, during the first half of this year, and this calls for an explanation.
-The cargo statistics by Oslo Gardermoen include only flown cargo that is only about half of the total volumes of export air cargo from Norway, says Knut Stabak, Oslo Airport marketing manager.
-Thus in 2009 the cargo terminals at Oslo Gardermoen handled about 150,000 tonnes of cargo, 70,000 tonnes of which was trucked into continental airports.
-We are told that due to the recent financial crisis, many Norwegian exporting companies chose to put shipments on trucks, rather than having them flown out of Oslo Gardermoen, and this trend may have now turned into a fixed pattern despite the change in the global economic situation.
-On the other hand I still find it puzzling that Oslo Gardermoen Airport should remain this separate from the global upturn in air cargo, so I will dig deeper into this issue and see if we can do anything to spur an change in the situation, says Mr Stabak.
In H1, 2010, Oslo Gardermoen Airport's international cargo dropped 8.9 percent to 21,620 tonnes, while domestic cargo fell 9.6 percent to 14,208 tonnes.
