Aug 25, 2010 (newstodate): Lufthansa Cargo has now unveiled its new bid for the air transport of temperature-controlled shipments, the Opticooler.
Developed in cooperation with Dokasch, the Opticooler will provide controlled transportation of shipments within the range 2-30 degrees providing both cooling and heating as required to keep a steady environment all along the supply chain from shipper to consignee, be it on trucks, in a warehouse or on-board the aircraft.
The new temperature-controlled unit, "costing a BMW", is built of aluminium, compressor-driven and designed for a 10-year life cycle.
Lufthansa Cargo is now building a fleet of initially 40 units, but has agreed to take a further 20 units now under construction, and the units will first be deployed at certain specific airports where full control of handling is secured. Later they will spread out to more and more destinations as experience grows.
