Aug 10, 2010 (newstodate): Finnair is rightly considering the Latvian carrier airBaltic a serious competitor in its home market.
During the first six months of this year, airBaltic transported 1.5 mio passengers flying domestic routes in Finland and traveling via North Hub Riga to/from destinations in the Baltics, Western Europe, Mediterranean region, Middle East and the CIS countries.
This was an increase by 22 percent, y-o-y.
In June alone, the increase was even higher - 204 percent, y-o-y, to 38,842 passengers.
In Finland, airBaltic offers flights to and from 10 airports, including Helsinki, Oulu, Lappeenranta, Turku, Tampere, Vaasa, Kuusamo, Kuopio, Rovaniemi and Kittila.
airBaltic is said to have cast its eyes on the Finnish commuter carrier Finncomm, so far considered a partner to Finnair that is now, however, bolstering its position by teaming up with the UK regional carrier FlyBe to perform flights for Finnair on a number of domestic routes as well as between Helsinki and Tallinn, Estonia.
