Aug 27, 2010 (newstodate): Indian media are quoting Finnair Cargo India on the launch of freighter services between India and Finland from next year.
According to India's Sify Finance, Finnair Cargo will set up a service between Helsinki and Mumbai after seeing cargo volumes increasing significantly over the recent period.
In the interview, Finnair Cargo's Indian manager says that cargo volumes on the passenger flights between Helsinki and Delhi grew by 5.4 percent, y-o-y, in 2009, despite a cut by 16 percent in capacity.
So far into 2010, Finnair Cargo has seen a 26 percent growth in its Indian volumes, y-o-y, and the 20 tonnes capacity on ex-Delhi flights are mostly fully booked.
The decision to launch freighter flights to Mumbai from Helsinki may be driven by the access to a second MD-11 aircraft for conversion to freighter after completing passenger services from the end of this summer schedule.
Commenting directly to newstodate on the Indian news, Finnair Cargo's regional manager however chooses a more cautious wording:
-We are operating six weekly flights out of New Delhi. To operate a freighter to Mumbai is a possibility in coming times and is only under evaluation at this moment, says Kuldip Singh Kharayat, Finnair Cargo regional manager for the Indian sub-continent.
