Aug 11, 2010 (newstodate): In its latest assessment of world flight standards, published on July 30, 2010, the US FAA maintains a Category 2 rating of Serbia and Montenegro.
This effectively blocks long-nurtured hopes in Serbia for establishing a direct non-stop route from Belgrade to New York and/or other US destinations.
-Carriers from Category 2 countries will not be permitted to commence service to the United States while in Category 2 status, although they may conduct services if operated using aircraft wet-leased from a duly authorized and properly supervised U.S. carrier or a foreign air carrier from a Category 1 country that is authorized to serve the United States with its own aircraft, FAA states.
Together with Ukraine, Serbia remains the only European state on the list of Category 2 countries where conditions do not meet ICAO standards for aviation safety.
