Aug 20, 2010 (newstodate): West Atlantic, the Anglo-Swedish cargo carrier, is putting its newly acquired Bombardier Q400 package freighter into operation from October 2010 - and does not preclude further Q400 freighters to be acquired.
-The carrier will monitor the initial performance and utility of this new aircraft, the world's only converter Q400 freighter. And if it proves successful, we may go for a second aircraft as well, says an airlne spokesman.
-This first Q400 comes with standard passenger doors and the OEM fit baggage door. This makes is perfect for carriage of small parcels and express shipments. If we decide to take in a second Q400 for conversion, it will be fitted with a Large Cargo Door and Cargo Handling System for ULD Operations, he says.
The Q400 now in the fleet of West Atlantic is an ex-SAS Q400 passenger aircraft, converted in Canada and delivery to its first operator, the Swedish carrier Nord-Flyg in early 2009.
SAS still has six Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 aircraft out of the initial 27 units for sale.
