Aug 17, 2010 (newstodate): As airline traffic is building up at Erbil in Kurdish Iraq, the need for development of the airport's cargo infrastructure is growing correspondingly.
Among the latest newcomers is Etihad Crystal Cargo that launched a twice-weekly service from its hub at Abu Dhabi International Airport to Erbil with an A300-600F offering a payload of 42 tonnes on the route.
Many passenger airlines are also bringing belly-cargo capacity on route to and from Erbil, such as Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Royal Jordanian Airlines, and FlyDubai.
To cope with the demand, the airport acknowledges that additional cargo facilities and services are needed, and this has now been included in the on-going process for working out a new master-plan for the airport.
The Erbil Airport has two runways at 2,800 and 4,800 m, respectively, facilitating operations by all types of aircraft even in hot and dry weather conditions.
