Aug 31, 2010 (newstodate): As part of the Nordic markets, Finland is still of importance to Korean Air Cargo although Helsinki remains the only Nordic capital airport not served by the carrier with freighters.
-Even if Finnair Cargo provides much capacity between Finland and the Asian markets, Korean Air Cargo still operates freighters with much larger capacity and we provide onward connections via just one AWB within our own network of destinations, says Carina Palmgren, Korean Air Cargo Sales Manager Sweden & Finland.
-As one example we can transfer shipments from Incheon to Pusan by air at no extra costs, and we provide own freighter capacity beyond Incheon to destinations like Beijing, Shanghai and other Chinese cities by just one AWB, while cooperation with interline carriers will inevitable induce extra costs.
-But of course the Finnish market is demanding. In contrast to e.g. Sweden and Denmark, the Finnish market is not used to a strong influx of foreign carriers at its home base, except for instance Cargolux and, for a period, Aeroflot Cargo, and maybe for this reason Finnish forwarders stay more loyal to their national carrier than is the case with many other markets.
-To my knowledge, Korean Air Cargo has no plans for opening freighter services at Helsinki Vantaa. Decisions to open new destinations are often driven by considerations about import volumes - and the Finnish market is now very strong in imports.
-Instead Korean Air Cargo is again increasing frequency on its services at Copenhagen Airport, to three weekly flights, while we are so far maintaining two weekly freighter services at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. Denmark and Sweden are cooperating about these capacities so if needed we transfer cargo between us to provide the best solution for the customer. This also benefits our services to the Finnish market, says Ms Palmgren.
