July 07, 2010 (newstodate): The Russian government will review the situation of the country's airport and the need for investments.
There are currently 328 registered airports in Russia, down from 973 in 1992 when efforts to close under-developed facilities started.
46 percent of the asphalt/concrete-covered runways are in dire need for repairs and development, and this is also the case with 18 percent of the grass-covered runways.
Today, only 65 percent of all airports have ILS systems and other navigational aids.
The Federal program 2010-2015 comprises means to finance upgrading and maintenance of 127 airports only.
The state is therefore developing a program allowing for transfer of ownership from state to regional Russian interests under a state guarantee model, which has already been used in the cases of Moscow Vnukovo, St Petersburg Pulkovo and other Russian airports.
