July 09, 2010 (newstodate): The Lithuanian Parliament is now to consider the recommendation by the Ministry of Transportation on the future ownership structure of the country's international airports.
-The airports at Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga are currently owned directly by the state, and the proposal is to change their status into public limited companies owned by the state, says Rimvydas Vastakas, Vice-Minister of Transport and communication.
-If this proposal goes through, the issue is also if they shall be owned by a joint plc, or if each of them will be set up as an individual plc.
-In either case, this will open up for the possibility of attracting private investors, and this might also entail the outsourcing of their management to experienced companies through tender processes.
-The main purpose behind this restructuring of the country's airports infrastructure is to see more flights, more routes and more motivation for consumers in the market to chose air travel, says Mr Vastakas.
Hopes are the the Lithuanian parliament will decide on the issue already in the coming autumn session, to allow for next moves from the start of 2011 already.
