July 02, 2010 (newstodate): Air India seems to be backing down on its plans to transfer its India-USA flights currently operating via Frankfurt to another European hub.
Instead, the carrier is to offer more direct non-stop flights between the two continents, reducing the needs for a European transfer hub.
A new integrated terminal, T3, is near completion at Delhi International Airport, and Air India will utilize the new facilities to open up more direct non-stop intercontinental flights to Europe, USA, and Australia from the coming winter program.
Flights to Frankfurt will continue but on a reduced scale, and the role of this airport will diminish under the new strategy.
So far, European alternatives to Frankfurt, notably Copenhagen Airport and Dublin Airport have hoped to be picked as the new Air India transfer point - but the race may be over.
