Jun 29, 2010 (newstodate): The opening of Stockholm Arlanda Airport's new perishables handling facility, APH Logistics, and the new BIP in the same building will open new business opportunities.
-For lack of facilities, Stockholm Arlanda Airport has so far had only a tiny fragment of the air import shipments of perishables into the Swedish market. This is certainly going to change now, says Karsten Bjarbo, Stockholm Arlanda cargo manager.
-Estimates show that there is a rich potential for attracting a significant slice of the total volumes now coming in primarily via Amsterdam, but it will of course require support from all parties involved to turn the traffic patterns around. We, at the airport, are ready to support APH Logistics in their efforts, notably in the form of joint marketing and participation in fora where these issues are in focus.
-Besides the large volumes of perishables imports we can also see prospects for a share in the transfer of Norwegian salmon exports to destinations in the Far East, and we would be keen to see also charter airlines considering loading perishables to the Swedish market at destinations in the fruit and vegetables exporting markets.
-Most notably, however, is the need to convince, not only the airlines but also freight forwarders of the new opportunities. In the end they play a crucial role in determining the actual movements in the perishables logistics chain, says Mr Bjarbo.
