Jun 01, 2010 (newstodate): On June 9, 2010, Slovakia will open the new passenger terminal at Bratislava M.R Stefanik Airport.
The new terminal will provide capacity to handling of a further one million passengers, to 3.5 mio passengers per year.
In a later stage, the airport's handling capacity is planned to reach five mio passengers per year.
That goal is, however, some way off as the country's civil aviation has seen several carriers folding their wings during the last 12 months, including Seagle Air and SkyEurope and recently Air Slovakia that lost its AOC in March 2010 and has now been declared bankrupt.
The airport also lost its Russian connection as Aeroflot closed its operations between Bratislava and Moscow from May 10, 2010.
On the positive side, the Slovak LCC Danube Wings is still very much alive and will become the first operator at the new terminal.
Slovakia's civil aviation business is also seeing the launch of Air Explore - a new ACMI provider set up by a group of former Seagle Air and Air Slovakia employees, headed by Martin Stulajter as CEO and co-owner.
Air Explore is shortly to lift off - albeit on routes from Italy during the summer season.
