Jun 01, 2010 (newstodate): Russia's Gelendzhik Airport, in Krasnodar Krai, is now open for traffic after a thorough modernization.
The modernization process was started in 2005, and works include the construction of a 3,100 m runway with approach from the Black Sea, a new passenger terminal and renovation of the airport's technical infrastructure.
The airport, operated by Russia's Basic Element conglomerate BazEL, aims at developing both passenger and cargo traffic.
The airport will replace the existing WW II military airfield, Krasnodar Airport that today accepts only small aircraft, but Krasnodar Airport will still have a role as an alternative for regional traffic.
