Jun 16, 2010 (newstodate): Plans for developing Finland's Vaasa Airport into a new cargo hub are progressing, and an announcement on financing of the project as well as a start date for construction works may be expected by August this year.
This, however, marks a delay from the earlier plan that set end of June as the target for announcing the financial solution and a launch date as well as a lead operator.
-The plans are indeed advancing, and we are seeing demands in the market growing as increasing volumes of cargo from industrial companies in the region are still trucked from here to Helsinki, Turku or Stockholm for uplift, says Riitta Bjorkenheim, Vaasa Region Development Company ltd Development Manager, flight logistics.
The airport is located in the midst of an important Finnish industrial area home to more than 100 industrial companies, including ABB and companies in the wind turbine and electronics industries, exporting over 70 percent of their production.
-Companies in the region are calling for enhanced access to express services by integrators as well as for freighter flights, and we are talking to both segments in the air cargo industry.
-Plans are that a new cargo apron area and two multi-functional cargo terminals will be in place by 2012, and to meet that target we need to start construction works by November 2010, says Ms Bjorkenheim.
