Jun 15, 2010 (newstodate): A working group is currently detailing plans for for turning Norway's Haugesund Karmoy Airport into a new center for uplift of fresh salmon exports shipments to the US market.
The idea was first vented last autumn, but has since gained momentum.
-A close dialogue with the regional industries has convinced the airport that there is really a need for a freighter service to the US market, says Martin Laurhammer, Lufthavnutbygging AS.
-Of the total production of Norwegian salmon, 15 percent is harvested by two companies in this region, and these volumes are currently trucked to Oslo Gardermoen Airport or to continental airports for uplift to the world markets.
-So we are convinced that there is definitely a demand for a direct service out of the airport closest to the production sites, Haugesund Karmoy Airport where the runway will allow for freighter operations with Boeing 757 aircraft lifting up to 40 tonnes of cargo without weight penalty.
-To pursue this business case, a working group has been established with participation from a consultant, and we expect findings to be available by this autumn.
-We are of course aware of the many difficulties to be overcome, but on the other hand a special salmon product, Salmalax, targeting the European and US market's Sushi restaurants with great success, is actually produced only here in the region, and this will in itself provide an important base load for a future freighter service offering short lead-times to market, says Mr Laurhammer.
