Jun 01, 2010 (newstodate): Today marks the opening of the Latvian carrier airBaltic's new hub at Tallinn, Estonia, as well as the launch of business by the Latvian ground handling company, North Hub Services, at the airport.
airBaltic is today also opening its new route between Stockholm, Sweden, and Tallinn, Estonia, and the carrier is to base three aircraft overnight at Tallinn Airport to support its existing and expanding traffic system from the airport.
North Hub Services has set up a subsidiary in Estonia as its first move under a strategy of expansion from the home base in Latvia into the ground handling markets of Tallinn, Helsinki (from July 1, 2010), Stockholm, Vilnius, and Copenhagen.
North Hub Services will, however, only be permitted to handle the traffic of airBaltic till the airport's traffic volumes exceeds the 2-million mark as prescribed by EU regulations for introduction of competition at European airports.
