Jun 03, 2010 (newstodate): The first new civilian airport built in Russia for 25 years, Gelendzhik Airport will be officially opened on June 5, 2010.
Its 3,100 m runway will allow for aircraft up to the size of Boeing 757 and Boeing 737 and Airbus A320-family aircraft, and the terminal has the capacity of handling 140 passengers per hour.
The airport has already started accepting flights by airlines including Aeroflot, Rossiya, Urals Airlines, UTair, Gazpromavia, Avianova and Atlant-Soyuz, planning for 57 flights per week or seven or eight per day during the summer season.
The airport will replace the existing WW II military airfield, Krasnodar Airport that today accepts only small aircraft, but Krasnodar Airport will still have a role as an alternative for regional traffic.
The airport is operated by Basel Aero, part of the Basic Element Group's Aviation Sector, that also operates airports in Krasnodar, Sochi, Gelendzhik and Anapa.
Basel Aero's airports handle just under nine of all Russia's air passengers, or 3.5 million passengers in 2009.
