Jun 15, 2010 (newstodate): India is a booming market for air transportation - and Finnair is increasingly focusing on tapping the potentials.
According to industry sources, yet unconfirmed by the carrier, Finnair is considering opening flights from Helsinki to Chennai and Bangalore from 2011, as well as increasing frequencies on the route from Helsinki to Delhi daily services and reinstating services on the route to Mumbai from this winter's schedule.
Finnair launched services from Helsinki to Delhi in November 1, 2006, and to to Mumbai on June 26, 2007, and was considering opening a third Indian destination, Bangalore or Chennai, by the end of 2008 when the global financial crisis hit the aviation business.
Finnair's flights to Mumbai were seasonally suspended early in 2009, but were never reactivated despite plans for re-opening operations from winter 2009. The carrier, however, still retains traffic rights on the route.
According to the same source, Finnair is also in talks with Kingfisher Airlines to provide increased coverage in the Indian market.
Other sources indicate that Finnair Cargo may be mulling plans for introducing its second MD-11 aircraft on flights to India when the aircraft has been converted to cargo version after serving its last season as passenger aircraft in Finnair's leisure traffic during this summer.
