Jun 10, 2010 (newstodate): Finnair is the first airline to order the developed long-range version of Airbus A321.
The carrier has placed orders for five new Airbus A321ER aircraft,. to be delivered from 2013.
The range of the A321ER exceeds 5,000 km, allowing for direct flights from Finland to e.g. the Canary Islands.
In the next few years, the new aircraft equipped with new wing-tip sharklets to reduce fuel consumption by up to four percent, will replace four Boeing 757 aircraft used on leisure flights.
The acquisition will standardize the Finnair fleet, allowing long-haul, European and leisure traffic aircraft to be flown by the same cross-certified crews.
The five narrow-bodied aircraft now ordered will replace an order for two long-haul aircraft planned for 2012-2013.
The Finnair fleet currently consists of 29 Airbus A320 aircraft and 12 long-haul Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft.
At the end of the year, the carrier will take delivery of one more A330 long-haul aircraft, and in addition, Embraer aircraft are used in domestic and European feeder traffic.
