Jun 08, 2010 (newstodate): Finnair's cargo volumes increased drastically in May, not least thanks to the introduction of its MD-11 freighter services between Europe and Hong Kong and Seoul by mid-May.
And as usual, the carrier's cargo business is primarily boosted by the Asian traffic, the cornerstone in the airline's strategy.
A total of 11,170 tonnes of cargo was lifted in May 2010, an increase by 72.3 percent, y-o-y, supported by the growth by 65.9 percent in Asian volumes accruing to 6,879 tonnes in May.
Other segments proved positive as well, such as North Atlantic traffic, up 53 percent to 758 tonnes, and European loads, up 45.9 percent to 2,058 tonnes.
After the successful May, volumes in 2010 were 43,406 tonnes - an increase by 29.6 percent, y-o-y.
Again, Asian volumes made the day with a total of 29,083 tonnes, up 36.8 percent, y-o-y.
In May, the carrier's over-all load factor was 77.8 percent, up 20.2 percentage-points, while it reached as high as 94.8 percent in the Asian traffic after growing 30.3 percentage-points, y-o-y.
With these massive growth figures, Finnair Cargo may be getting closer to a decision on introduction of its second MD-11 converted freighter.
