Jun 02, 2010 (newstodate): A cargo growth in May 2010 by 54.3 percent in total volumes - that is the latest monthly result from Denmark's Billund Airport.
The exceptionally high growth is due partly to the general increase in Denmark's airfreight, but also caused by the introduction of DHL' daily Boeing 757-200F operation between Billund and Leipzig.
Included in the total volume of cargo handled by the airport in May, 5,340 tonnes, are 3,185 tonnes of imports, up no less than 109.3 percent, and 2,155 tonnes of exports, growing moderately by 13.7 percent, all figures compared to last year.
After the strong performance during the recent months, Billund Airport's total cargo volumes during January-May 2010 reached 22,791 tonnes, an increase by 32.3 percent, y-o-y, including 13,053 tonnes of imports, up 62.2 percent, and 9,728 tonnes of exports, increasing by 6.1 percent, y-o-y.
DHL launched its Billund-Leipzig freighter on April 6, 2010, but only two days later the Icelandic volcano ash cloud closed the airspace, so the new service only gained momentum from early May, as reflected in the statistics.
