Jun 09, 2010 (newstodate): While cargo handling companies quarrel with Copenhagen Airport over a solution to cargo security issues, some airlines may soon be losing patience.
-While the parties are quarreling over either reinforcing the existing fleet of cargo carts, acquiring new units, or introducing video surveillance we are still forced to carry on with daily operations entailing extra costs for meeting the security demands anyhow, says the manager of one major carrier with both freighter and passenger aircraft cargo activities at Copenhagen Airport.
-In this environment we may be tempted to seek our own solutions. We could for instance take our loose freight to the passenger aircraft in closed cargo containers, unload the freight at the aircraft and take it onboard - and vice versa.
-This would meet the security demands and would entail little extra cost if we agree with the cargo handling provider. Also airlines without container loads would work together with us and have their freight in our containers on the road between the terminal and the passenger aircraft area.
-This might eventually develop into a rather complicated picture with each player setting up his own solutions. But a solution is urgently needed, and if the leading parties cannot agree on a way forward, we will take action ourselves, he says.
