Jun 24, 2010 (newstodate): No solution is yet in sight to the issue of security around cargo transports from terminal to aircraft stands at Copenhagen Airport.
The airport was supposed to call another meeting with cargo handling companies, but after two weeks no invitations have yet been send out.
In the meantime, cargo terminals are enforcing own temporary solutions to meet demands, including plastic wrapping or an extra guard to follow the cargo truck.
One the of airport's largest cargo terminals, WFS is using plastic wrapping to secure the shipment on the 15 minutes ride from terminal to apron. After that the plastic is cut loose again and left in containers.
-This is indeed new to me and certainly calls for investigation, says Erik Nielsen, Copenhagen Airport head of environmental department.
-To my knowledge, there are no containers dedicated to this purpose, and I find it problematic to learn that what must be significant volumes of plastic waste are left without proper handling and sorting.
-We have seen volumes of waste left in containers dedicated to collection of FOD objects rising three-fold, and maybe this has some connection to the question raised.
-In any case this calls for closer attention, and while waste may be turned into a resource generating revenue, it seems little in sync with the airport's over-all efforts to present itself as a green airport with a focus on the environment, says Mr Nielsen.
