May 10, 2010 (newstodate): As expected, the Icelandic volcano ash make a deep impact on Finnair's cargo volumes in April, 2010.
Volumes were up, but less dramatically than in the previous months, showing a 7.3 percent increase, y-o-y, to 7,279 tonnes including first of all Asian cargo that was still up 16 percent to 5,116 tonnes.
The important European traffic was strongly hit, down 13 percent to 1,286 tonnes, while the North Atlantic traffic, less affected by the ash, fared better: up 44.1 percent to 675 tonnes.
After April, total volumes were 32,237 tonnes, an increase by 19.3 percent, y-o-y, with the Asian traffic dominating with 2,204 tonnes, up 29.7 percent, y-o-y.
Finnair's Asian cargo volumes will grow even more in May as the carrier introduces its two weekly MD-11F flights on each of the routes from Helsinki to Hong Kong and Seoul, launched on May 12, 2010.
